Amenorrhoea is divided into two categories.

•    Primary Amenorrhoea
When periods haven’t started by the age of 14 and there are no signs of secondary sexual characteristics (such as developing
      breasts and pubic hair)

When periods haven’t started by 16 and there are secondary Sexual characteristics.

•    Secondary Amenorrhoea
When periods have stopped for at least 6 months.

What can cause the periods to stop?

•    Emotional stress
•    Weight loss
•    Excessive physical exercise
•    Some medications e.g. antipsychotic
•    Disorders of the endocrine system e.g. an under active thyroid gland, an increase in a brain hormone called prolactin (rare), high levels of male sex hormone (rare)
•    Polycystic Ovarian syndrome: see link above
•    Ovarian failure or early menopause (rare)
•    Abnormalities of the vagina such as a sealed hymen, which prevents the blood from escaping. This also rare.

Please see a doctor if you have any concerns about this.
