Cervical Cancer Vaccine

There are 180 different subtypes of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). It is known that infection with the HPV can cause Cancer of the Cervix. The subtypes linked with Cancer of the Cervix are HPV 16 and 18.

A vaccine has been developed which is thought to be able to prevent up to 70% of cases of infection with the subtypes linked with Cancer of the Cervix.

A new programme of immunisation aimed initially at 12-13 year old girls is due to begin in 2008. Ideally the vaccine needs to be given before women become sexually active, but it still possible to receive it after. Three doses of the vaccine are required.

There is a catch up programme proposed for 16-18 year olds in 2009 and 15-17 year olds in 2010.
