Culture Shock

CULTURE SHOCK

Leaving home to study in a new country can be a stressful experience. You will need to make many adaptations including getting used to the climate change, different food, language, dress, social roles and values.

It is important that you familiarize yourself with the healthcare in the UK and your eligibility for it.

The first point of contact for healthcare in the UK is provided by GP’s, General Practitioners. These are doctors who are trained and experienced in diagnosing a wide range of health problems. •    Doctors surgery
•    Optician (for vision tests, glasses, contact lenses.
•    Dentist
•    Pharmacy (chemists)

The Accident and Emergency department is only for very serious urgent medical conditions or accidents. Your GP will refer you for other hospital care if required.

Out Of Hours, a cooperative of GPs and nurses will offer advice and treatment. They are contactable on 464242. An answering service will take your details and you will be phoned back by a doctor
