Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME / MYALGIC ENCEPHALOMYELITIS

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a general term for a wide range of conditions including myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME).
‘Myalgia’ is muscle pain and ‘encephalomyelitis’ refers to inflammation and dysfunction of the brain and spinal cord.

What are the symptoms?

The main symptom of CFS is profound and continued fatigue and exhaustion which does not go away with sleep or rest.
Other symptoms include
• Muscle and joint pain
• Poor short- term memory and concentration
• Painful glands
• Stomach ache
• Sore throat
• Severe headache
• Insomnia and sleep disturbance
• Sensitivity to light

What are the causes?

CFS is a complex condition and there is, as yet, no consensus on a single cause. It appears that a variety of physical and psychological factors may cause and trigger the condition.

What should I do if I think I may have CFS?
